Pennsylvania Weighs In
Initially listed as a possible recipient of state funds as far back as 2002, the historic site remained for inclusion in the current state budget passed July 4th. The intervening time has been well spent with planning and preparation at the site, conducting archeology, researching exhibits and raising dollars to exceed that match. The state funds will be devoted to facade restoration work, a critical component of the project's Phase I, the goal for which is just over $7 million. Phase I work is scheduled to begin in a few short weeks in time for completion by March 2009, and also includes restoration of the Underground Railroad cistern. This important archeological treasure currently sits within its protective covering as construction of our new 8,700 square foot underground gallery space progresses around it.
In addition to Governor Rendell for his willingness to invest in our vision for this nationally-significant historic site, we extend special thanks to state Senator Gib Armstrong, state Representative Mike Sturla and Lancaster's Mayor Rick Gray--among others--for their ardent support of this request to Harrisburg.
